Public Art

MA in Cultural Production, Paris Lodron Universität in cooperation with Universität Mozarteum Salzburg

Public Art

The course will focus on public art. I will present the art history and theory of public art since the 1960s, when public art became a new genre. Different from art presented in the museum or the gallery space public art in the city confronts everybody with its existence.

We will follow the interdependence of the developments of public art and the development of the city, its architecture, its economy and the increasing surveillance and privatisation of the public space. We will see the development of art in the city from drop sculpture to site-specific sculpture to new genre public art, which is social and political intervention. One of the main questions will be what is the public, what is public space, what is art in public space and how did they develop during the last 50 years.

Teaching Moethods and Practical Exercises

There will be a reading list in advance with texts, which will be discussed in the course. I will give a surveillance lecture on the art historical development of public art since the 1960s. And we will experience some of the public art works in the city of Salzburg.

Aims of the course

The course will discuss the relations between art, the viewer and the city and give an overview on the history of public art. The students will work on specific examples in the city of Salzburg
